Lesson VII

Revision:

Look at the image E and fill out the names of the items. You can find the names in the earlier lesson.

Kore wa watashi no hon desu. (This is my book)

Sore wa nihon no shinbun desu. (That is Japanese newspaper)

Are wa watashi no kaban desu. (That over ther is my bag)

Now look at the Image Fa You can fill the empty lines yourself.

Just a little help and Rei means example.

Rei 1:  Kore wa kagi desu ka? (Is this a key?)
Hai, so desu. (Yes, it is) Kagi desu. (It’s a key)
Rei 2: Kore wa ho desu ka?
Iie, so dewa arimasen. (No, it isn’t)  Jisho desu. (It’s a dictionary.)

Note:
We have four version of thank you:
Domo         Arigato                    Arigato gozaimasu                      Domo arigato gozaimasu
     +                                       ++                                                                              +++                           politeness

Kore wa N2 no N1 desu.
Kore wa N2 no desu.

N2 = subject
N1 = object

We can write the sentence without the object

Example:

Q: Kore wa dare no hon desu ka?
= Kore wa dare no desu ka?

A: Luka-san no hon desu.
= Luka-san no desu.

Watashi no desu. (This is mine)

The practise for this is IMAGE Fb, 5.

Kore wa watashi no hon desu.
Kono hon wa watashi no desu.

For subjects                                              For objects

KORE                                                              KONO
SORE                                                              SONO
ARE                                                                  ANO

Note: Anata (you) is used very rarely, because it’s considered to be impolite, they use name with – SAN instead.

Hiragana: DUKUON and exercise:

Lesson VIII

Q: Kono kaban wa Polona-san desu ka? (Is this bag Polona’s?)

A: Iie, Polona-san no dewa arimasen. (No, it isn’t Polona’s)
or Iie, chigaimasu. (No, it isn’t.; Chigaimasu literary means different)

Look at the image Ga, it a conversation in the reception.

308 onegai-shimasu. (Room 308; the onegai-shimasu is very polite expression for please)

Hai, dozo. (Yes, here you are.)
Kore wa anata no tegami desu ka. (Is this your letter?)

Hai, so desu. (Yes, it is.)
Domo arigato gazaimasu. (Very, very polite thanks)

A, chotto matte kudasai. (Wait a minute, please; chotto – a little; matte – wait; kudasai - please )
Kono borupen mo anata no desu ka? (Is this pen also yours?)

Iie, chigaimasu. (No, it isn’t)

The phrases on Image Gb, come in handy with filling up the exercises in Image Hb.

Note: WA stands with the subjects before them and with objects behind them.

Hiragana: HANDAKUON and YOON, and exercises:

I just bought myself the Japanese phrasebook and there is some good stuff there, which made me laugh, specially the section Romance and I want to share it:

Asking somebody out:

- Would you like to do something (tomorrow)?                (Ashita) nani ka shimasen ka?

- Where would you like to go (tonight)?                          (Komban) doko ni ikitai des ka?

- Yes, I’d love to.                                                          Hai, zehi tomo.

- Sorry, I can’t.                                                             Sumimasen, ikemasen.

Local talk - descriptions:

Pick-up lines:

                        sit here                                                Koko ni suwatte

on the phrasebook part, I want you - Anata ga hoshi
Hoshi means star doesn't it?

I think it's supposed to be Anata ga hoshii (with two i's)

Yes, you are right the correct form is 恻恗恄, but some of the books when writing in romanji omit the double letters as in this case, where they omit the i in hoshii.
